One of Australia’s favourite jockeys, Damien Oliver, etched another chapter in the history books by winning his seventh VRC Oaks and third in a row when guiding Willowy ($3.70) home at Flemington on Thursday.
Already the record holder for most Group 1 races won as a jockey in Australia, the veteran hoop added another to his tally to make it 122, including seven Oaks victories.
All up he’s now won 126 Group 1s – including four in New Zealand – and on Thursday drew level with George Moore for that record.
Oliver won the Oakes on Miami Bound in 2019, and on Personal last year, completing the stunning hat-trick with victory today.
Oliver holds the record for most Group 1 wins at the Melbourne Cup carnival, and the record for most wins overall at the same carnival.
“It’s pretty amazing to think a little kid from Perth could be up with those world-famous names like [Roy] Higgins and George Moore, it’s something I’m pretty proud of,” Oliver said after the win on Willowy.
Oliver had to fight aboard Willowy in the straight, but edged out Douceur ($21) to hit the line in front.
“I didn’t know if I was going to get there until the last bit,” Oliver said.
“The second horse looked like it had it. But I really asked her for a big effort late and she responded really well.”
