The Wimbledon men’s singles draw has one less major contender after 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini withdrew due to COVID-19.
The Italian world No.11, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final, has tested positive to the virus and pulled out just two hours before his opening match was set to begin.
Berrettini was due to face Cristian Garin in the first round of the All England Club tournament, but lucky loser Elias Ymer will now meet the Chilean world No.43.

“I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw,” Berrettini posted on Instagram.
“Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament.
“I have no words to describe the extreme disappointed (sic) I feel.
“The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger.
“Thank you for the support.”
The withdrawal of Berrettini is a boost to Nick Kyrgios and Alex de Minaur as the Australians chase their maiden singles grand slam titles.

Berrettini’s COVID-19 blow follows the withdrawal of 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, who pulled out of Wimbledon after testing positive to the virus on Monday.
Berrettini has won seven ATP singles titles and defeated young gun Felix Auger-Aliassime in a quarter-final at Wimbledon last year.
The big-serving star lost to Djokovic in the decider 7-6 (4) 4-6 4-6 3-6.
