Essendon great Tim Watson says the Bombers should consider offering Collingwood gun Jordan De Goey a tantalising contract at season’s end.
After discussing star recruit Jake Stringer‘s importance to the club, Watson floated the idea of Essendon pursuing another midfielder-forward like De Goey to AFL reporter Sam Edmund.
“And to that end, I just wonder how hard Essendon might go, and the interest levels they may have for somebody like a Jordan De Goey,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“What are you hearing, Sam?”
“Nothing on that,” replied Edmund.
In fine form during the Pies’ opening four matches, De Goey finds himself out of contract at the end of this season and will be eligible for free agency if he wishes to leave Collingwood after eight years.
It has been reported that several rival clubs have shown a strong interest in De Goey, who in the off-season was temporarily stood down and barred from the Pies and their facilities before previous assault and harassment charges were resolved in the US.
After Essendon’s slow start to the season which included a 48-point thumping by Fremantle last Sunday, Watson said the 26-year-old star could be just what the Bombers need.
Asked if the Bombers should write De Goey a cheque he “can’t refuse”, Watson said: “When you look at your playing list and you’ve got somebody like a Stringer that can do what he can do and then you’ve got somebody like a Jordan De Goey out there that possibly you could recruit with the right level of money. Do you try and throw a nice juicy contract his way just to try and entice him?”
Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph last month reported on Fox Footy that De Goey and Collingwood were happy to halt contract talks until mid to late April before committing to negotiations for “what would be a multimillion-dollar long-term deal”.
