Sydney Roosters star Joey Manu says he’s still “good mates” with Latrell Mitchell despite the South Sydney fullback’s controversial hit on his former teammate.
Manu was at the centre of the biggest talking point in the NRL when his season prematurely ended after Mitchell landed a high shot that left the Roosters centre with a shattered cheek and eye socket.

Mitchell was banned for six games over the incident.
The pair had previously played alongside each other with the Tricolours where they were part of back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019.
Speaking to Nine’s Danny Weidler, Manu shut down any suggestions there was bad blood between the pair after Mitchell’s dangerous tackle.
“I think we’re still pretty good [friends],” he told Nine News.
“We’ve been friends for a long time now.
“When I came over here [to Australia], I went through the ranks with him [at the Roosters]. We’re still good mates.
“It was pretty tough at the time, I’m not going to lie… we’ve talked a bit.
“He messaged me after [the incident]. I haven’t seen him since. I will see him soon [in Round 3].”
Manu and Mitchell will meet again when the Roosters and Rabbitohs meet in Round 3.
The Roosters centre said he feels a lot better having nearly recovered from the incident.
“There were a few tough weeks, my face was swollen and I looked a bit worse for wear,” Manu said.
“I’ve got three plates in there, a couple of other stuff – I’m not sure what.
“[My face] feels normal. There’s a bit of numbness still, but I feel sweet.”
