Former strongman champion Alex Simon’s professional boxing debut has ended in bizarre circumstances, after he was disqualified for tripping his opponent, Tavita Vaoga.
Simon, a former Australia strongman winner nicknamed ‘Godly Strong’ – and tipping the scales at 136.7kg – was disqualified in the second of four scheduled rounds.
The referee stopped the fight after Simon threw Vaoga to the canvas while they clinched, for the second time.

“What are you doing?” Referee Les Fear said as he waved the fight off.
“I’m not having that kind of thing.”
Fear had previously warned Simon twice in the first round.
“He was trying to show his strength, but in the wrong areas,” Jeff Fenech said in commentary.
“Those things are unnecessary.”
On replay, you can see Simon throw a punch after the trip as well – which Fear said afterwards was the main catalyst for the DQ.
“Disqualified him? Oh no,” Paul Gallen mouthed while watching backstage.
Vaoga, who was giving away more than 25kg in weight difference, was giddy after the victory.
There was also confusion over the length of the fight’s rounds. It had been billed as four three-minute rounds, but the bell sounded after two minutes in the first.
