New Zealand Rugby has sought to cool speculation All Blacks coach Ian Foster is on the chopping block after suffering a shock series loss to Ireland.
Despite a late comeback, the All Blacks went down 32-22 in Saturday’s decider to cement a 2-1 win for Ireland.
Ironically, the only All Blacks win came without Foster in attendance having been struck down by COVID-19 prior to the opening encounter at Eden Park.

On Sunday, the customary post-match press conference was cancelled at the last minute with no explanation given, only fuelling speculation.
Shortly thereafter, New Zealand Rugby chief executive officer Mark Robinson issued a statement seemingly affirming Foster’s position.
“Congratulations to the Irish team for their well-deserved win last night but clearly the performance across the series for the All Blacks was not acceptable as we know they have reflected,” Robinson said.
“We all know there is a huge amount of work to do. Our focus now is to work with Ian and his team to understand thoroughly in advance of the Rugby Championship what is needed to improve performance and where to from here. We will begin this work immediately.”
Foster has faced scrutiny of late having lost four of the team’s last five matches.
That’s seen the All Blacks drop to an all-time low fourth in the world rankings.
Foster deflected questions on Saturday night, expressing “I just want to talk about this test match” before crediting Ireland.
Former All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams cast doubt over Foster’s spot just hours after the defeat.
“Maybe, maybe we will,” said Williams when asked if a coaching change prior to next year’s Rugby World Cup was on the cards.
“I’m not going to sit on the fence because I’m a pretty strong advocate of coaches need to be put under pressure just like players need to be put under pressure too.
“Those questions need to be asked. The All Blacks, whenever we lose, it’s kind of like a funeral in New Zealand.”
While Williams had few positive words to say for his former side, he was complimentary of Ireland after their series success.
“Obviously, as an All Black man it was tough to watch,” said Williams.
“I’m just happy for Ireland. Ireland’s team, Ireland’s supporters. Their coaching staff and the players, I’ve played with a few of the guys and they’re really good guys.
“Playing against the Irish guys, Aussies and Kiwis, we have a great affinity with those blokes just because they’re good people.
“Tough to see, but I think in terms of the bigger picture which is the World Cup next year, it’s pretty exciting.”
The All Blacks are less than a month away from their first match in the Rugby Championship against South Africa.
