The Sydney Roosters have won their first game of the NRLW season, keeping their finals hopes alive at the expense of a winless Newcastle Knights outfit.
The Roosters scored six tries to catapult them to a 28-12 victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Roosters coach John Strange was particularly impressed with his side’s attitude in defence.

“Once again we sort of came up with errors in the first half but the attitude to defend our areas was there and defended really well,” he said.
“Coming in in front at halftime we were on top but our completion rates – which we spoke about at halftime – for us were 53 per cent and was 92 for them (Newcastle). So yes, we were on top but we were still making it hard for ourselves.
“So we addressed that in the first half, got it out to about 76 per cent, got to our kicks and then built pressure which is what we are trying to do.”

The Chooks also welcomed back captain Corban Baxter at fullback after she missed the opening two rounds due to illness.
“Obviously having Corbs back was really good,” Strange said.
“As a player [she’s] very good, great fullback.
Baxter’s inclusion allowed Brydie Parker to move out to the wing where she scored two tries and assisted another.
Yasmin Meaks moved to the back row and Sarah Togatuki to the middle which balanced the side.
