Golf is typically a reserved, quiet, respectful sport.
On Sunday (AEDT) you could be forgiven for thinking you were watching a football game unfold when Sam Ryder aced the famous 16th hole at the Phoenix Open.
It’s a hole like no other in golf, with the par-3 surrounded by grandstands filled with fired-up fans typically fuelled by alcohol.

Think of the scenes at the Australian Open a fortnight ago when Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis won their doubles final.
As the day goes on the Phoenix Open spectators become more lubricated, and more raucous. It created the perfect atmosphere when Ryder stepped up to the tee late on day three and smacked an iron into the tricky green.
His ball plugged to the right of the hole and then crept left, the crowd jumping to their feet as they watched it drop into the hole for an eagle.
As Ryder celebrated with the rivals and caddies around him, the spectators jumped up and down and hurled beer into the air, with hundreds of cans and cups flying onto the fairway and even onto the green.
“We are covered in beer. Everyone is going insane,” one commentator said.
“We might have a slight delay on the 16th here, because it’s going to take a little bit of a clean-up when you take a look at what is happening.”
