Former Australian Test cricket captain Tim Paine has announced today that he will be stepping away from all forms of cricket.
In a brief statement released by Cricket Tasmania, it was announced that the 36-year-old would “be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future.”
“Tim’s decision makes him unavailable for selection for today’s Marsh One-Day Cup match against Western Australia,” the statement read.

“Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer.”
All forms of cricket would of course include the opening Ashes Test, due to start at the Gabba in less than two weeks.
His manager, James Henderson, confirmed the news and said that no further comment would be made.
“[He] is stepping away from cricket for an indefinite mental health break,” Henderson wrote on Twitter.
“We are extremely concerned for his and Bonnie’s well-being and will be making no further comment at this time.”
The main candidates to replace Paine as the new keeper are Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, and Jimmy Peirson – the former two of which are in the extended Australia A squad.
Australia is expected to announce a new Test captain later today.
