New Waratahs coach Darren Coleman has continued his signing spree with the arrival of props Ruan Smith and Archer Holz for the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season.
The duo join former Manly NRL player Tevita Funa as new arrivals under Coleman after the 23-year-old outside back’s signature was announced on Tuesday.
South Africa-born Smith most recently played under Coleman with the LA Giltinis and the 31-year-old is poised to make Australian Super Rugby history by taking the field for all five clubs.

Smith started his Super Rugby career with the Force in 2012 before moving on to the Brumbies, Reds and Rebels.
“It was no secret that last season we struggled a bit at scrum time, so with the few spots we needed to fill, size, experience and an aggressive nature were key aspects we were looking for and Ruan ticks all those boxes,” Coleman said.
“He’s been a Super Rugby player for a long time, he’s big, experienced, aggressive and brings a lot to our dressing room as well.

“Ruan’s a great team man who understands team harmony and chemistry and will be a great mentor to the good battery of tight head props we have.”
Smith joins a stable of props that includes Wallabies Angus Bell and Harry Johnson-Holmes.
“DC called me and asked if I was interested in playing for the Waratahs and told me I had a lot to offer the group,” Smith said.
“Playing for Waratahs is a massive opportunity, it’s the biggest team in Australia.
“We’ve got a great young team and even though I bring a lot of experience I think they’ll offer just as much for me as I will for them.
“Being around these young guys gives you a lot of energy and makes me feel a lot younger than I am.”
Fellow new signing Holz, 21, will be one of those up and comers soaking up knowledge from Smith.
Holz grew up in the NSW outback town of Lightning Ridge and made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies this year.
“What Archer brings naturally is a really big body, and he knows how to use it effectively,” said Waratahs assistant coach Pauli Taumoepeau, who has worked with Holz in the Shute Shield.
“He’s a beast in the scrum and had a lot of success there for us at Easts and brings a real presence in defence.
“He adds depth to our front row and provides that crucial next level of competition keeping our other guys on their toes.
“I’m really looking forward to see him develop his skill set here at the Waratahs.”
