Supercars has confirmed that this year’s Gold Coast 500 will not take place a second year in a row, with officials deciding to can the event due to safety and logistical concerns surrounding COVID-19.
The event, held on the streets of Surfers Paradise, had been scheduled as the final round of this year’s Supercars championship, held across December 3-5.
Construction work set to begin on the Gold Coast circuit in the coming weeks is one reason behind the cancellation of the event.

“Given the evolving and unpredictable COVID situation, it has become increasingly challenging to stage a complex multi-faceted event on the streets of Surfers Paradise for 10s of thousands of spectators this year,” Supercars chief executive Sean Seamer said.
“We understand that our fans were looking forward to the season finale on the Gold Coast.
“To cancel the event for a second year is an incredibly difficult decision, but a necessary one.
“We thank the Queensland government via Tourism and Events Queensland and the City of Gold Coast and Major Events Gold Coast for their ongoing support.
“We fully intend to return to the Surfers Paradise street circuit in 2022, and we are confident that everything is headed in the right direction for us to do so in spectacular style.”

Supercars bosses are working on plans for the finals five events of this year’s championship.
Shane van Gisbergen is leading the championship on 1926 points, ahead of Jamie Whincup (1650) and Cameron Waters (1514).
