Firebrand GWS superstar Toby Greene’s finals series hangs in the balance after he landed himself in hot water for making contact with an umpire in the Giants’ one-point elimination final win over the Swans.
Greene is likely to come under scrutiny from the match review officer after vision caught the Giant walking toward umpire Matt Stevic, complaining as he bumped him on the way to the side’s three-quarter time huddle.
Intentional contact with an umpire is an offence that can be directly referred to the AFL tribunal by MRO Michael Christian, with the potential of a suspension to follow.
Speaking at full-time, Greene insisted he didn’t intend to make contact and was simply “in the moment”.
“I don’t know what it was. It was just in the moment and certainly would never touch him,” he said.
“I was just talking to him about something in the game, but yeah.”
A series of missed simple shots ultimately cost the Swans as they threatened to overrun the Giants in a gutsy comeback.
Star Swans forward Isaac Heeney snared four goals in the second half as John Longmire’s men closed from 23 points down at the half-time break.
But Will Hayward, Tom Hickey, Sam Wicks and James Bell all failed to kick goals they should have slotted in the final term as the Swans, despite dominating the midfield battle after trailing by 19 points at three-quarter time, fell short.
